CATARACT SURGERY The Difference you can SEE

Whether your cataract diagnosis is new, or whether your cataract is “over ripe” and more complex, you can trust our expert team of fellowship trained cataract surgeons at Ophthalmology & Cataract Surgeons of Texas help you see clearly again.

We offer conventional and femtosecond laser cataract surgery

A Cataract is the clouding of one’s natural lens that is in the eye. The eye is like a camera, and as you age, the natural lens turns cloudy. Cataract surgery is the only way to treat vision loss that occurs from a cataract. It is one of the most safest and successful surgeries ever performed.

How is Traditional Cataract Surgery Done?

During traditional cataract surgery, eye surgeons (ophthalmologists) make a small incision in the eye and remove the cloudy lens (cataract) manually using a pen-shaped ultrasound probe with suction. The cataract gets replaced with an implant called an intraocular lens (IOL). The incisions are small and self sealing, and usually do not require stitches.

What are my Lens Options?

Cataract surgery patients can choose between various lens types, including intra ocular lenses (IOL) that correct for distance or reading vision. Advanced technology IOLs can correct astigmatism and/or provide distance, intermediate, and reading vision (“multifocal lenses”) that lets patients reduce their dependency on glasses. Dr Shah uses the most advanced technology available to precisely measure the dimensions of the eye to accurately calculate the power of the lens implant. She will also guide you into making the best decision for your visual needs and budget.

What does the Laser in Cataract Surgery Do?

The laser starts off by using a camera with an ultrasound to “scan” your eye and get measurements about your cornea, your lens, etc. Based on it’s measurements and the surgeon’s treatment plan, the laser makes incisions to correct astigmatism and “fragment” the lens into perfect small pieces, to soften the cataract. Then the patient is taken to the operating room where the remainder of the surgery is done. Laser assisted cataract surgery is an incredible advancement.

Dr Shah is certified on both the Alcon LenSx and the Johnson and Johnson CATALYS.  She proudly does not have financial relationships with either of these companies, so your treatment is unbiased. These platforms offer unparalleled precision at correcting astigmatism, creating the perfect circle for the lens implant, and fragmenting the cataract.
